Scandinavian humor...

Reverend Ole is a pastor at the local Norwegian church and Pastor Sven is the minister of the Swedish Covenant Church across the road.

One day both Pastors were seen pounding a sign into the ground that read:

As a car sped by them, the driver leaned out of his window and yelled, ”Leave me alone, you Skandihoovian religious nuts!”
A sound from the distant curve in the road they heard screeching tires and a big splash…
Rev. Ole turns to Pastor Sven and asks,”Do Ya Tink maybe DA sign should yust say, “Bridge Out?”

Scholarship Luncheon a Smashing Success!

May 8th 2010 was the Annual Scholarship luncheon with three recipients:
The scholarship winners are : Emily Knuutinen, Dylan Rogers and Daniel Wagstaff. For information on the winners and their excellent academic accomplishments and school plans for next year please refer to the ASF website at This year due to our fundraising efforts we were able to give out 3 scholarships of approximately $2,000 each. Many of you are to be thanked for your efforts in our scholarship fundraising efforts, without which we would simply not have been able to achieve our goals!

In addition to the much needed funding, our Young Vikings, represented by Courtlin and Vienna, gave each student Starbucks gift-cards. Way to go Young Vikings!

Thank You, Evelyne Houdek for getting the articles and photos out about our 2010 scholarship winners into local newspapers. See more picture from the event here

By Evelyne Houdek

In our last newsletter I wrote about my curiosity as to the identity of Marie A. Jendresen, in whose honor our Founder’s Award is given periodically. Those of us who have the privilege of wearing the medallion should know of the woman who dedicated so much of herself to our American Scandinavian Foundation. Many of my questions have been answered, and I would like to share what I have learned, and introduce you to our Marie.

Marie was born in Nebraska on May 30, 1905, one of 6 children born to her father Louis Anderson and his Esther. She was married in Solvang in 1929 to Jorjen H. Jendresen, and they raised a family of three daughters in Santa Barbara. The eldest Esther (Woods) still lives in Santa Barbara, as does one of twin daughters Marie (Fairbanks), and the other twin Margaret resides in Virginia.

Marie was very proud of her Danish heritage, and during the war years she dedicated a great deal of her time and energy to furnish and decorate the hospitality room at Camp Cook (now Vandenberg Air Force base) in a Scandinavian motif. Many of the people who worked with her on this project became the nucleus of the first American Scandinavian Foundation group founded in 1947, meeting in the Jendresen home. In addition to her interest in arts and crafts, Marie was a writer, and wrote in Danish for the Danish newspaper “Bien”. She served as President of ASFSB from 1956-1958.

Marie’s husband passed away in 1969, and Marie remained in Santa Barbara until her passing in 2000. I can thank Ehrene Groff for setting me on the right track to find information.

I have tried to compile a list of the many people who have followed her example and were chosen to share her original honor. In most instances the choice was made by the seated Board of Directors, and presented at an Annual Meeting.
